Summary:
One summer in New Bern two teenagers fall in love. One is named Allie and the other is named Noah. Noah comes from a hard working farm family where as Allie comes from a wealthy prestigious family. Allie's parents didn't like Noah and forced them to separate by Allies family going away. Over two years after they were separated Noah wrote letters to Allie, but when they came in the mail, Allie's mother hid them so Allie couldn't read them. Noah worked in a lumber yard an became close to his boss. When he went to the army his old boss did and left him a lot of money so when he came back he received it. This was enough money for him to follow his dream of fixing up an old house to make it beautiful.
Meanwhile Allie had met a man named Lon. He was a successful lawyer from a successful family. She wasn't completely happy with him but she knew her parents liked him and she loved him so she stayed. He was good to her. One day she saw a newspaper article about Noah and the house he fixed up. In curiosity she traveled to New Bern without Lon's knowledge. She spent three days with Noah. The first day she told him she was engaged but she came back the second day to see him again. SPOILER ALERT........ She spent the night in his house and even though they both tried to hold back their love, for she was engaged, they couldn't suppress it and they got together once again. The next day Allie's mother came to the house, because she just knew Allie would be there. She warned her daughter that Lon was very worried and he was coming. Allie left Noah's house with much resistance to go meet Lon. But after telling Lon she came back to Noah's house because she chose him. They ended up getting married and having kids. They lived a happy life full of love and surprises.
When Noah and Allie got older however, Allie started forgetting things. At first Noah just brushed it off but as it got worse they had to go to the doctors. Allie was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. Eventually her and Noah went into a nursing home. Although she does not know who Noah is, He still comes and reads to her everyday, and some days by the end of their day together, Allie remembers their love. He reads to her the story of their life.
